Roast Chicken and Red Raspberries

March 22, 2014
When some people talk about money
They speak as if it were a mysterious lover
Who went out to buy milk and never
Came back, and it makes me nostalgic
For the years I lived on coffee and bread,
Hungry all the time, walking to work on payday
Like a woman journeying for water
From a village without a well, then living
One or two nights like everyone else
On roast chicken and red wine.

Dear Reader,
Last night I dined on roast chicken and red wine like everyone else. Well there was no red wine. There were red raspberries though, and they tasted like spring. I hadn’t gone to the grocery store in two weeks and my cupboard was a barren wasteland of inappropriate starches and I was replacing meals with tea. At the grocery store I walked by the meat counter and saw their roast chicken and, unable to resist living a poem, I picked one up and brought it home to sup like a queen.
Roast Chicken and Raspberries- The Person I Am Tonight
Having food in the house again makes me feel like a functioning human being, and gives my parents some relief I am sure. When I got home from work today I opened a care package from them, out of which spilled two dozen or so little baby bels in several colors and flavors. Living in post-grad land, a meal like this and a gift like that are beyond just simple. They made my whole evening shiny and sweet.

I am increasingly coming to believe that starchy things are agents of Satan and because I want to fit into all the fabulous spring fashions I’ve been gushing over, I tried to shop a little healthier this time. As you can see, I did a great job.

Yes, friends. The new Ben & Jerry’s core flavors are out. In case you missed the internet furor when these were announced, I will give you a quick rundown of what they are. They consist of two different flavors of ice cream, in this case chocolate and peanut butter with tiny peanut butter cups, and a central pillar of some sort of filling. In this case, peanut butter flavored fudge. So when I said feast, I meant feast. Although caviar and champagne would not be turned down by me at any point, in post-grad land it’s the simple things. Like slurping up a million calories while you watch Tangled on a sketchy internet site.

I was way happier than I look in this picture. I think this picture was taken in some sort of weird euphoria state in which I could not express any emotions. Or I was hypnotized. Shiny shiny spoooooon. I might still be under the sway.
Anyways. Happy Spring! Check me out on Sunday morning friends because Saturday night I am going to see Cinderella with the Boston Ballet! Well I am not going with the ballet company. Although they will be there. Hope to see you then 🙂

I might have to have an affair on Haagen Dazs with Ben & Jerry.
